Is reading a good book becoming a anacrohism in this 21st Century?I

I confess, I like to read a good book. As a matter of fact, I have always enjoyed reading a good book. Sometimes I even enjoy reading a half good book....   I don't know when I started this habit - but at least all throughout my adult life.  I admit, I'm hooked.

The only reason that I bring this up is that on four separate and entirely unrelated recent occasions, I discovered that there are many folks among us who not only don't read books --- they never have!  A young military hospital corpsman opined as how he had never read a whole book in his life. When I asked how he got through high school without reading a book for English class or whatever - he grinned and said that Cliff notes were always available for book reports - and no test ever quizzed specific contents of books.

When I asked him why he had not, his response was simply, "I don't know, I just never did and now it seems like a huge project - to read a whole book."

I was ordering something by E-mail from a lady of my approximate age in Alaska, the subject of books came up and she shared the fact that 'neither she nor her husband of fifty years have read a book in years,"

Now don't get me wrong - I'm not a flag waving, mouth frothing, book thumper....  but to be honest, I don't see how anybody in this day and age - with libraries, the Internet, Kindle  -- could go through life and not want to read a good book.

Before I retired, I read two fiction and one non-fiction book per month, minimum!  Since I've retired I read four fiction and two non-fiction books per month. And I still have plenty of time for the news, TV golf, this little Blog, a couple military chat rooms, cooking, and writing my own books. Two thus far - but I didn't start till I was 75, so give me some slack.....

How about you? When was the last time you picked up a good book, turned off the TV and PC and enjoyed a good read?
