"A veteran - whether active duty, national guard or reserve, retired, or discharged from any of these- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America', for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it."

An interesting adjunct to this statement is a review of the current veteran status of the US Congress - wherein only 31 Senators have ever served their country (less than 1 in 3) and only 101 Representatives have served... less than one in four. These are the folks that purport to direct the military policies of our country, foreign and domestic.
Lest you be impressed with these numbers (and you shouldn't be) please note that some of these Vet's are in the ilk of Ted Kennedy, who when expelled from Harvard in May '61 for cheating on an exam, quickly avoided the draft and joined the Army and slavishly served his country by spending his two years active duty at SHAPE Hqs in Paris. Just a lucky assignment I guess.
