One term gob'nor and career political hack, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, just did it again. But before I go on, let me 'splain that the sitting secretary of the Navy has almost 'royal' authority to name ships.
Thus, he raised a little dust recently when he named a new ship after Caesar Chavez, who's only connection with the navy was a two year peace time stint and to which he later publicly referred as "the worst two years of my life".
Now, he has just flown in the face of navy tradition and named a new LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) after ex-congresswoman Gabby Giffords....... (add here) Bless her heart.
I guess there just weren't any Navy, Marine heroes, or battles to name the ship after - so it seemed reasonable to name it after somebody who is still alive and never served in uniform or done anything of consequence for the US Military in general or the US Navy in particular.
Ahh Well......
