I note with more than nodding 'what's new' attitude that a couple of elementary school teachers in PS #59 in New York City decided to enhance their math classes with historical (social studies) questions. Here are just a couple:
1. “One slave got whipped five times a day. How many times did he get whipped in a month (31 days)?”
2. “In a slave ship, there can be 3,799 slaves. One day, the slaves took over the ship. 1,897 are dead. How many slaves are alive?”
Isn't that cute? These belong in no public school, but certainly not in a reasonably even mixed race class of fourth graders. 60% white, 15% Hispanic, and about 5% black.
The civil war was over a hundred fifty years ago!!!!!!!!! Over!!! The massive civil rights bills have been passed one after another... There are no victims!!
Ooops, no victims? Let's make some then!!!
Let you mind flow freely, think what would happen if they posed these questions?
1. Leroy Jones has 22 members in his Gang. Four were killed in a shootout with the bloods over their crack business. How many gangstas are left in Leroy's gang?
2. Jorge Quinones steals three bicycles a week from a nearby Gringo neighborhood. How many bicycles does Jorge steal in three months?
You get my drift.... the tip of the liberally slanted iceberg that we see is scary, because we know how much of that iceberg we never get to see.
Sleep with one eye open partner!
