NABJ; "Thumbs down to Imus's return!"

Your humble host was surprised this week (not really) to hear that the National Association of Black Journalists (NAJB) sent a public letter to a privately owned broadcast company telling them not to rehire that dastardly entertainer, Don Imus. Now folks, I ain't never thought ole' Imus was the brightest bulb on the porch, or the funniest, but he is an entertainer -- nothing more!

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Association of Black Journalists urges Citadel Broadcasting chief executive Farid Suleman and Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes to halt negotiations to return former radio personality Don Imus to the radio and television broadcast airwaves.
Recent reports that Imus is in informal talks with Fox Chairman Roger Ailes and is finalizing contractual details with Citadel Broadcasting are unimaginable.
Imus was fired last April after the shock jock called members of the Rutgers women's basketball team 'nappy-headed ho's.'

Now, ya gotta wonder, why would the NAJB give a rat's patoot whether this entertainer has a job or not? It's not a role that their own constitution calls for them to play:

Constitution
Preamble:
We, the members of the National Association of Black Journalists, believing that Black journalists nationwide should bind themselves together in an effort to increase Black employment in the media, to increase the number of Blacks in management positions, to encourage and educate young Blacks interested in pursuing a journalism career, and to monitor and sensitize all media to racism, do enact and establish this Constitution for the governance of our members.

Was Imus's comment racist.... probably? Was it mean spirited... perhaps? Was it funny.... that would be in the ear of the behearer. But I ask if the NABJ's own constitution calls on them to ferret out racism in entertainment today? Seems to me their own charter charges them with watching out for racism in journalism and in journalism management.

But let's give 'em the benefit of the doubt and believe that they are the self-appointed arbiters of racism in American entertainment today.. They've been around since '75, have you noticed any PR releases regarding the vulgarity, profanity, and racism spewing from the lips of"

Chris Rock? Black Rappers? Richard Pryor? Eddie Murphy? This whole class of rising black stars on the Comedy Channel.

Forget "Ho's", let's talk body parts, the big "N" word, rape, murder, fornication, defecation, urination!!!

Nah, I didn't think you did! If Al Sharpton used the word publicly, in or out of context, do you reckon they'd get all tense and riotous? I don't think so. I think the bottom line here is money! As in fundraising, collecting donations, creating cash! Such phony and selective indignation is usually rooted (pun intended) in digging for bucks!! Oh, did I mention that they have a fund raising arm????? Go to their site and check down that left hand column and click when you get to that magic word: "DONATE" !
