Turned out the service had been outsourced and he was talking to a call taker in a call centre in Pakistan - and when he told the gal that answered that he was not only depressed, but that he was feelin' plumb suicidal --
She got her manager on the line, all excited kinda, and they wanted to know if he knew how to drive a truck or fly an airplane.........
Trust me on this one!

...ordered a part for a Dell laptop yesterday.
Called the 1-800 number in austin, TX, was sent to "Rumen" in India to find the part number, sent to "Kristy" in the Philippines to check stock in the Dell Ohio warehouse, sent to another "John" in Panama City, Panama to place my order and "John" was all bent out of shape when I explained it was against Company policy to give credit card information to folks outside of the US. Immediately, the programmed spiel began about how Dell is an international company and the data would be protected - I interrupted and asked if I could speak with the "Ohio" warehouse. I was given a sales 1-800 number and was connected to "Stacy" in India who connected me to "Robert" in Panama who I had to explain Company policy had still not changed in the last 45 minutes, and again I got the "most trusted mail order house" spiel again, I interrupted and asked to be connected to the Philippines again.
Had "Susie" in the P.A. change my quote to an online order and logged into Dell Austin to complete the transaction.
I was a little disturbed yesterday afternoon when the online order showed 2 -3 day shipping time for a part that a guy in Panama had told me Dell had 600 of in an Ohio warehouse that could be ordered from the Philippines if I coordinated the effort through India so I called India back again. I got Oklahoma City and "Nguyen" told me they were a mail order business and real time delivery schedules could not be actually determined, and lo & behold, he started into the "most trustworthy..." programmed spiel again, I interrupted and decided to let cyberspace do its thing and watched my email box anxiously.
Last night I received a tracking number for my shipment made the same day from a warehouse in Houston.
As Vinnie Barbarino would say... "I'm sooo confused..."
Again, how many Austin layoffs did Dell announce?
I feel your pain "Anonymous" but at least you didn't have to press #1 for English..! Or did you?
nope, I think what I heard was english.
BTW, part arrived this morning via courier (pleasant Jamaican guy) the primary screen was stamped "made in Korea", the interconnect cable "made in China" and the box it came in was stamped "printed in Buda, Texas" - so I have concluded Dell is a homegrown TexIndoPhillPanaKorChin-lanistan Company.
Who says our dollars don't go "farther" than they used to?
