..... for children born in the U.S.A.
There has been a lot of cussin' and discussin' regarding the wording of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution:
Amendment 14 - Citizenship Rights 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the juristiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.....
There are those who propose changing the wording of this Amendment in all manner of ways. Those that do are called racists, demagogues, bigots and worse. 'Course these stones are hurled mostly by those in positions of power who's very base is composed of illegal aliens and minorities. It sure seems to me that some change is warranted in the 21st Century. This ain't the 18th Century anymore.
The mass immigration in Europe caused by old colonization rules and the new 'open border' rules of the Euro government have forced countries over there to rethink their rules regarding 'birthrights', I reckon Germany has come up with about as reasonable answer as I have seen:
German citizenship laws as amended in 2001:
As of January 1, 2000, children born in Germany to foreign parents acquire German citizenship at birth if at least one parent has lived legally in Germany for a minimum of eight years.
Eight years seems a little stringent --- but how about amending that 14th Amendment to;
Citizenship Rights 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside if at least one parent has lived legally in the United States for a minimum of twelve calendar months.....
The twelve months is an arbitrary figure which is minimal but is long enough to preclude citizenship for so called drop in babies where the parent runs across the border to create anchor babies. Just my thoughts Pilgrims --- what do y'all think? Hope you'll share your thoughts with your government representatives!
